gamom1boy1girl's Full Review: Recaro Start - Sun Booster Car Seat
Yep, that's right. My 7 year old is still riding in a booster seat. Some of my friends think that I am crazy, but I am no more crazy than the trucker on my right and the woman on my left that forgot to put her mascara on before that important meeting. We are all in rush hour traffic and I am not about to let my little ones get hurt without doing all I can to protect them.
So, with that thought on the brain, I had some searching to do. My son was always complaining that his Britax looked too much like a car seat, and I didn't like the look of the old Graco booster so what was a mom to do that a 7 year old boy would approve of? I did some research (or actually we did it together) and we agreed on the Recaro Start booster seat.
So far, this seat has not disappointed. I liked the look and feel of it. I purchased one that matched the interior of my car (pretty closely). I liked the way it fit into my car. It fits both my mini van seats and my smaller car seat perfectly. I liked the way my son fit into it. It was wide enough to allow him comfort but snug enough to allow safety and for me that means peace of mind.
He likes that he is sitting taller and can therefore see out of all of the windows. He is not limited to the left and right side. I have one of those curious kids that likes to see where we are going and point out every sign and traffic light all the way there, so this seat is perfect for him.
The seat itself is no lightweight, but then neither is the child that is sitting in it. The seat weighs appx 25-26 pounds and therefore should be a consideration if you are planning a lot of in and out use. The purchase of a second one may be in order if you do not wish to lift it often. The child weight for the seat is a child weighing 30-80 pounds with a height not taller than 59 inches.
This truely is a seat that grows with your child. As any parent knows a child does not stay the same size and just because they get bigger does not mean you have to give up on their automobile safety. The Recaro is a blessing for the worried parent of a growing child. The seat bottom cushion is adjustable between 19 to just under 23 inches in length. The backrest of the seat can be adjusted from 27 to just over 32 inches in height. The base of the seat is from 18 to almost 23 inches. The headrest is fixed. It has these great little side wings that stick out on either side. For the child this can be annoying because it gets in the way of them being able to see out of the left of right easily, however, they serve a great purpose. The first one is it keeps your child's head from flopping around if they fall asleep on that long car trip, but there is something much more fun about them. I will get to that. BUT... this is just the begining.
This will get the dad in your life excited. The Recaro start is made by the same Recaro that makes seats for those really high priced sporty cars. Just because it is a car seat, they don't cut any corners. The same comfort and technology can be found in both the seat for the child as well as the seat for the adult.
Remember a paragraph or so back when I was telling you about those slightly annoying little side wings. Well, they are actually audio speakers. . .one on either side. These serve a great purpose. They allow your child to listen to his or her very own audio programming without you having to hear a thing. Just think, a child that gets to listen to whatever the popular thing is and you still get to listen to your own music without having to hear how "boring" it is. Nothing like a quiet ride. Another great thing I have learned is both of my children can listen to want they want to and the arguing over who hears what has left my car!
So, that is the fun part of the seat, but safety features (and that is wha it's really about right?) include:
1. That wonderful shock absorbing polyurethen foam
2. A teather to hold the seat in place for added security
3. Ergonomically shaped for healthy child growth
4. The frame is made from a flexiable aluminum that bends on impact in case of an accident. This is important for energy absorption of the impact. Give it to the seat, and not to your child.
5. The seat travels eaisly and the cover is easily removable for machine washing.
There are many more great features but I will let you find that out for yourself. I truely feel that when they invented this seat they thought of it all and it shows in the nature of the product.
