At one time, I was an avid reader of People Magazine. I had a subscription and looked forward to getting a new issue every week, so I could read all about the stars and some "real people", too. I still like to read People, but not quite as much as I once did. The magazine's style and content have made a subtle change in recent years that I don't like as much.
What is People Magazine?
People Magazine is a weekly publication that focuses on news about celebrities. It's heavy on photos, coverage of red carpet events, celebrity baby announcements, and celebrity scandals. Lately, Britney Spears and Angelina Jolie seem to be the magazine's favorite subjects, but in the past, Princess Diana was regularly featured. The magazine also covers human interest stories about "regular folks" as well as people who were regular but became famous or infamous due to some twist of fate. Madeline McCann's parents come to mind, as do people like Elizabeth Smart.
Regular features
Some regular features in People Magazine include Star Tracks, which mostly consist of pictures of celebrities, Scoop, which is celebrity gossip, Passages, which consists of births, deaths, and marriages news, and my personal favorite, Reviews, which has reviews of the latest books, TV shows, movies, and music. I will confess that a lot of the books I read and review on Epinions were found in People. I'm not as wild about the music reviews, though, since my tastes tend to run to so-called classic artists or people who aren't mainstream enough to be in People.
Who reads People?
I'd say this magazine is aimed at women, though it's not so women centric that men can't enjoy it, too. It makes for good light reading in the dentist's office. Most of the articles in this magazine are light and fun, though there are some serious topics that come up.
How much does People cost?
People Magazine comes out every week except for one double issue at the end of the year. A one year subscription for U.S. residents costs $116.07. Canadians pay $155.48, probably in Canadian dollars. Each issue has an individual list price of $3.99.
What I like about People
Besides the book reviews, I do enjoy some of the articles about certain celebrities. However, I think I like the articles about regular people more than the ones about celebrities and unfortunately, it seems like regular people articles are less common in People nowadays.
What I don't like about People
It seems like People has become more shallow over the years. Or maybe I'm just getting old and crabby. I never expected People to be highbrow reading, but it does seem to be more tabloidesque than it used to be. Lately this magazine reminds me more and more of Us Weekly.
Would I subscribe again?
Probably not. I used to really enjoy reading People, but I guess I just don't care anymore about who they think the sexist man alive is or who ranks among their most beautiful people. I do still occasionally pick up an issue at the store if I see one that looks interesting, though.
Overall
People Magazine is not a bad magazine to look at if you want to keep up with the stars and not look like you're into tabloids. But it seems like the magazine's quality has gone a bit downhill in recent years as its price has gone up.
