This hole in the wall located just off Rittenhouse is one of the best Korean restaurants in the city. Although I still prefer Kaya in Boston.
As I said already, this is a hole in the wall, so the atmosphere leaves something to be desired. However, the staff is friendly and very helpful. The food on the other hand is out of this world, yummy!
The menu might be a little confusing because there are a few dishes with the same name. I solve this problem by pointing when I order (I know it's not polite!).
A good appetizer to start with is the scallion pancake (portion is enough for three to four people), the dipping sauce is what really makes this good. I personally am not a huge fan of the dumplings, but it is definitely another option.
Definitely, I would recommend the Bi Bim Bap Del Sot (rice, chicken broth, beef, assorted pickled vegetables, and fried egg served in an earthenware pot) or Kim Chi Chigae (very spicy dish of sauce and Kim Chi plus a few extra veggies). The Chap Chae (noodles with onions and mushrooms) or Tofu Chigae (variation of the Kim Chi Chigae) are both also quite good. The Korean barbeque looks quite tasty as well. For the dull and boring (or first time visitor) you can always stick with the Bul Go Gi (marinated beef).
As a side note, the earlier you arrive the more accompanying side dishes you tend to receive.
For those of you who love spicy food, be forewarned, spicy here is DAMN HOT, but like most spicy lovers you will like it that way.
I have never in my life needed reservations, I don't think it will ever be so crowded that I will. The other nice thing about this restaurant is that takeout is available, and they are on the web (www.koreahouse.com)
