Dixie Beer (Lager): A microbrewed macrobrew

Pros: Refreshing, thirst-quenching, clean.
Cons: Suffers from lack of character and flavor.
The Bottom Line: Works as a quick thirst-quencher but otherwise achieves very little. Lacking body, character and flavor. I was expecting a decent lager from a company as well-respected as Dixie.

I’ve spent the last week or so reviewing some excellent beers, with Theakston’s Old Peculier, McEwan’s Scotch Ale and Adambier, being among some of the best in the world. Today was another one of those 100-degree plus days out here in the desert so I decided to grab a lager and relax outside.
I picked up Dixie Beer as a miscellaneous gathering of lagers, to coincide with the rise in temperature. I’m not the biggest fan of lagers, although there are some exceptional ones that I really enjoy. At the same time many are a little too light, uninteresting and lacking in character for my taste. You probably realize where I’m going here, yes this one fell into the latter category.
The Corporate Version
Unlike most of the beers on this website, epinions do not carry a basic description of Dixie’s beers. So I thought I’d just fill you in with what it says on the label.
Slowly aged in Louisiana Cypress Wood barrels, brewed with crystal clear water, genuine barley malt, choice hops, select grains, and pure yeast.
The Proof
The pour is light in body, very pale in color with a thin white foam. There’s a pleasing sign of carbonation, which certainly rescues the first impressions a little. Having got a whiff of the nose before the pour I was slightly impressed with a good fruity malt aroma with a hint of hops. However this soon turned into disappointment the second I tasted the beer. The palate is very light and I’d even verge on saying weak, running a little watery. The flavors don’t really jump out either. It’s a little sugary at the tip of the tongue, turning a little grape-like. But, there’s very little else other than a slight dryness in the finish and virtually no aftertaste.
The Verdict
I have to say that there’s nothing displeasing about this beer, it is a good refreshing thirst-quencher. Other than that the beer doesn’t do anything for me, it’s weak, there’s no body, no character and very little flavor to speak of. It’s better than you’ll get from a Budweiser, after all it’s brewed with pure ingredients, but not by too much.
I expect something better from a brewery that carries such a well-respected name. Having also reviewed Crimson Voodoo recently, it seems that their reputation is based on the success of one product, that is the Blackened Voodoo. That, I will have to try soon.
