Cons: Pricey at $15.50 per box (7 packets/box) plus S/H; must stay 100% on plan.
The Bottom Line: Delicious shakes; easy to pack along. The price is high, but being heavy will come with a higher price in the future.

MEDIFAST 55 SHAKES - YUMMY!
Medifast promotes a diet plan which makes it necessary to purchase Medifast meal replacement supplements which include but are not limited to the Medifast 55 shakes. The traditional Medifast plan involves 5 Medifast meal replacements, 1 lean and green meal and 1-2 optional snacks per day.
THE MEDIFAST 55 SHAKE
The Medifast 55 Shake comes in a small box that includes 7 identical white paper packets that contain premeasured shake mixes that you mix with 6-8 oz. of water; depending upon how thick you like it. The mixing instructions are listed on the side of the box along with serving suggestions that might include the use of ice cubes and blenders; crushed ice is much easier if your refrigerator dispenses it. The purchase of a ‘magic bullet' or similar small blender helps tremendously with taste and proper blending, but is not required. The Medifast 55 shakes contain 11 grams of protein (vs. 14 grams in the Medifast 70 shakes) and 25 vitamins and minerals, and they are low-lactose, soy based products.
The following flavors may be purchased on Medifast's website at www.medifast1.com:
Banana Crème, Orange Crème, Dutch Chocolate, French Vanilla Swiss Mocha, and Strawberry Crème.
The shake mixes contain whey, are kosher dairy, vegetarian and caffeine free with the exception of Swiss Mocha (8.7 mg) and Dutch Chocolate (2.25 mg). Please note that if you have dairy issues, the ready-to-drink shakes are lactose & whey free and they come in chocolate and vanilla. The price per container is quite high when combined with shipping/handling, but the problems associated with dairy intolerance take a much higher toll on your daily life.
WHAT'S THE PLAN?
Like all good weight-loss sites, Medifast is no exception in listing remarkable success stories. Of course their weight-loss is not typical since typical dieters don't lose weight quickly and usually gain it all back plus a few extra for trying. The plan works if you follow the rules and stay on plan 100%, which translates into changing your lifestyle, controlling your food demons and exercising. Medifast offers more meal replacements than shakes. Their selection includes such delicious items as cappuccino, tropical punch, caramel nut bars, blueberry oatmeal, chicken noodle soup and scrambled eggs (yes even eggs in a white little packet). The plan involves your choice of any 5 Medifast meal replacements (only 1 bar per day) and a lean and green meal. You space your eating 2-3 hours apart during the day and drink 6-8 glasses of water minimum.
IS IT PALATIBLE?
The shakes taste like their names imply. The shakes are actually quite good especially since you can end up with something akin to a shake when you blend them with crushed ice. The many varieties of sugar free coffee flavorings on the market today allow you to come up with all kinds of palette pleasing additional shake flavors. Dutch Chocolate plus peanut butter drops, French Vanilla plus carmel drops, or a splash or two of vanilla diet coke with the Banana Crème shake. Mmmmmmm good! You can even use the flavor drops with the ready-to-drink shakes -- just cut open the containers and put it in a mini blender with the drops.
IS MEDIFAST TOO EXPENSIVE?
The $15.50 per box plus shipping/handling includes 7 packets and is quite steep compared to picking up a can of another shake mix; however the shake mixes are pre-measured and packaged to make them easy to take with you even if you go on vacation for a week. Coupon codes on the internet are out there to help bring the price per box down.
The Medifast plan is expensive if you plan to simply dabble in it. But as an overall diet plan and if you are truly serious about weight-loss, then the price is well worth reducing your girth and improving your health. The shakes are great and this plan is super easy to fit into any lifestyle, from stressed out college student, to busy Mom, to high-powered executive. As long as you are willing to commit to being on the ‘Medifast plan' 100% then this plan will work for you.
