lous69's Full Review: Sony DVPFX810 Portable DVD Player
Is this the greatest DVD player ever produced with a fantastic display and sound quality - NO. Is it a great utility device that does what is says it will do - YES!
I travel 40 weeks per year and most domestic flights no longer have movies or play the same ones over and over again. I bought the DVP-FX810 for the express purpose of whiling away the time while sitting in the middle seat of 737 traveling to who knows where.
For this purpose I find the DVP-FX810 more than adequate and a great value. The swivel screen allows you to position the device so that even in coach with the seat in front of you at full recline you can see the screen well and have room for your drink and peanuts.
The double earphone jacks allows you to share your movie with fellow travelers. I even have a splitter and one time I had two complete strangers watching the movie with me. Neither complained of any problems with seeing the screen at angles. Also the plastic cover over the screen makes it easy to maintain and prevent the actual screen from getting scratched.
Where the DVP-FX810 really saved my bacon was at a recent presentation when my computer died. I had a back up of my presentation video on DVD-R and low and behold it played on the DVP-FX810! I used the included remote to pause and move forward and back.
Since it comes with the remote and a full set of accessories you are not wanting for options. I played a full length commercial DVD on my hotel TV and the video quality was excellent. The battery lasts longer than most domestic flights so no complaints there. I watched two feature length movies and some of the extras on the DVD on and overseas flight with non problems.
One time I forgot to recharge the unit in my hotel room so I used the included car charger while I was in visiting with clients and the unit was fully charged by the time I got to the airport.
I have had problems with pixelation as stated by other reviewers but simply rewinding, stopping and pushing play cleared these up. At first, I had problems with hearing the movies even a full volume. I discovered it was not the unit but the cheap earphones (earphones are not included with the unit) I had bought many years earlier. After buying a quality set of earphones, half volume is plenty even when sitting by the engines on the plane.
In my opinion this unit is well worth the $180 USD I paid for it and I look forward to many years of movie enjoyment at 30,000 feet.
