fuche_bu's Full Review: Unibroue La Fin Du Monde Beer 750ml
Canadian beers are beginning to suffer from a syndrome similar to the one facing American beers. When you mention Canadian beers most people will think of Molson or LaBatt or the major breweries. This is the same mentality as the one that limits American brews to Budweiser, Coors and Miller. Both countries have thriving craft brewing scenes.
Anyone who wishes to explore the wonderful craft beers from Canada will have to eventually come to the brilliant beers from Unibroue. This small brewery from Chambly, Quebec has developed quite a reputation in its ten year history. In 1994, they developed a Belgian style beer called La Fin Du Monde. For those who don't know French, that means The end of the world.
This is a big bold beer to say the least. The brewers employ a triple fermentation method that allows for a complex, powerhouse brew. I have raved on about Unibroue beers in the past. My opinion of this beer will also require high praise.
The first thing one should know is that this is a potent brew. It weighs in at a hefty 9% abv. This is not a beer for the uninitiated. Legs have been known to turn to rubber after a few of these. Caution is recommended when one tackles this beer.
My most recent reunion with La Fin Du Monde came about a week and a half ago. It was a Saturday night and I was home watching a late night Flyers game broadcast from Calgary. Watching my beloved Flyers fall behind 4-2 late in the second required an extra strong beer for reaffirmation. So I fished through the beer fridge and grabbed a bottle of this beer.
I found a goblet and began to slowly pour the beer. This is an intensely well carbonated beer. It fizzes out of the bottle and rises up in the glass. Craft beer has taught me the virtue of patience. I have to pour little by little as the huge, creamy head slowly subsides. I notice a pale golden hue. The brewers call it a blonde with a golden hue. Fair enough.
The beer also has a luminous quality to it. It is not really hazy or cloudy but the high carbonation gives it a very lively character. There is a bit of a yeasty character in the nose. But I also notice herbal, spicy hints in the aroma.
The first sip is mostly head. Even there, I notice nuances of fresh baked bread. As I continue to drink the beer, I begin to notice the spicy flavors in the beer. There are hints of anise and coriander. The esters also provide fruity flavors in the beer.
This is a surprisingly drinkable beer. Most triples and Belgian golden ales are pleasantly drinkable. They manage to conceal their high alcohol very well. The beer also has a relatively light body for the strength. I guess overall, it is a medium bodied beer. The only indication of the high alcohol comes when I get a warm feeling in my belly.
La Fin Du Monde is a great beer to sip late at night when you need to wind down. Detecting all the complex characteristics of the beer helped me temporarily forget the results of the game. This is a beer to be savored and appreciated. It's not for every occasion and probably not for every beer drinker. I think those who enjoy Belgian style beers will like this one. It is a good beer for those who are new to Belgian styles, too. It's very complex and high strength but it doesn't have some of the more extreme characteristics of some other Belgian or Belgian style brews.
Do I need to mention that as I took the last sip, the buzzer sounded the end of the game and a 5-4 Flyers win? So I guess it wasn't really the end of the world after all.
